Café del Mundo Chitarra di Flamenco

Two personalities – one passion:  Jan Pascal and Alexander Kilian are living the flamenco guitar.

Opposites attract and creative tension sparks between plus and minus: The two exceptional artists Jan Pascal and Alexander Kilian are like fire and ice – and this is precisely why they complement each other so well and form a musical symbiosis of world-class excellence. As a duo, they themselves embody the essence of a musical genre which combines opposites like no other does: authentic and timeless, dreamy and unrestrained, down-to-earth and mystic. Inbetween life and death the flamenco resounds.

“In passion” is a unique musical experience, recorded live in front of an audience at the Theaterhaus Stuttgart. Two gifted instrumental artists declaring their love for pure and genuine music. In a dialogue where virtuoso fragility and archaic vigour caress each other, they revel in pictures and tones, challenge each other, spurred on to musically outdo each other – and the same as between plus and minus, a magical aura develops which nobody can escape: Three encores and standing ovations conclude a sensational, unforgettable concert.

Jan Pascal, born in 1975, comes from a family of musicians. He received his first guitar as a present from his grandfather in Spain and his first lesson from an uncle. After his mother’s accidental death he first grew up at his grandparents’ and later on in a music boarding school. After lessons in singing and playing the piano and the guitar, he started his own recording studio in 1996 and founded the indie record label visioninmusic in 2002.

Alexander Kilian, born in 1987, is regarded as a child prodigy at the guitar. He received his multicultural musical education from Zaza Miminoshvili. At the age of 15, Alexander won his first international contest with the piece “Guajiras de Lucia” by Paco de Lucia, followed by numerous master classes and concert invitations to Israel, Russia, Georgia, Spain and Italy. In 2011 he received the art diploma for jazz guitar.

In 2007 the two artists met at a workshop for flamenco guitar. This meeting was followed by numerous concerts and CD recordings about which a critic wrote that he felt as if he were sitting in the legendary “Café Cantante”. This statement ultimately lead to the band being named “Café del Mundo”.

The quartet graduated from the Dutch String Quartet Academy (NSKA) where the Ragazze
attended masterclasses given by leading musicians from the international string quartet world. The quartet continue lessons with their mentor Luc Marie Aguera, violinist of the Quatuor Ysaye (made possible by the Dutch Kersjes Foundation).

Amsterdam Consort Musica classica

An encounter with Leonardo da Vinci

A merging of visual art and classical music

‘Pièce de résistance’ of this program is the homage to Leonardo da Vinci. He was a ‘Universal Genius’, an Italian polymath whose areas of interest included painting, sculpting, architecture, mathematics, science, engineering, invention and anatomy.

But … Leonardo da Vinci had also interest in literature and music!

Fables are found in Leonardo’s notebooks from the years 1487 to 1494, when he was working in the service of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan.  They were written in the margins, perhaps as little notes to amuse or remind himself while he worked on bigger projects. Leonardo seems to have been interested in nature and finding examples of how various creatures would cause their own doom.

During the performance paintings of several fables will be projected on a screen above the musicians. This visual show and the live performance is an amazing, intense and wonderful combination. As such, the program aims to bridge the disciplinary boundaries between visual art and music. The paintings are made by professional and amateurs that take part in courses of Accademia libera natura e cultura and Foundation Art connects People in Querceto val di Cecina.

The program includes compositions by: Vivaldi, Boccherini, Danzi, Dvorak and others. On request the program can be performed with and without intermission.

The Amsterdam Consort

The Amsterdam Consort is a Dutch music ensemble and performs regularly on special locations.

Concerts and opera are the main activities of The Amsterdam Consort. The consort does not focus solely on the standard repertoire. The programmes also include remarkable, little-known works, some of which are only available in manuscript and have never been published. The performances of these compositions in combination with more familiar works prove to be refreshing to listeners and performers alike.

The musicians have known each other for many years and played together in several ensembles and orchestras. They love to play in The Amsterdam Consort because of the common vision on the performance of the music, the inspiring atmosphere and the special context of the projects. Not unimportantly, the musicians all have an affinity for Mediterranean culture, cuisine and wine. The shared passions for music and culture and the outstanding quality of the musicians result in vibrant and performances.

CLAIRE ISELIN arpa e arpa celtica

Music is an international language that allows one to express and communicate beyond speech and in a much more profound way. The child is desirous to learn, the youth look for a way to express their emotions and the adult is eager to understand, or simply to realize a childhood dream.

Claire Iselin has been a deputy teacher at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, London UK, in Junior Department since 2007. She is a committed and enthusiastic person that wishes to share her passion of music with her students and the elegance, charm and magical aspects of the instrument. Her vision of education is to innovate, bestow the pleasure to work and learn, provide pupils with the taste and feel of achievements and the desire to excel.

She says: "no one leaves her lesson without laughing at least once and without making me laugh in return"

claire iselin jpgAchievements range far and wide, as her talents have taken her around the world. Her most recent achievements include her debut at Carnegie Hall (2014) during a tour throughout the United States and her participation in the 2013 IBLA Grand Prize International Music Competition where she won Outstanding Musician.  Distinct honors include the Isabel Bond Gold Medal for Excellence in Performing (2013), Director’s Prize for Achievements (2013), 1st Prize in the Repertoire Orchestra Concerto Soloist Competition (2012), Principal harpist of the World Orchestra (2013), and 1st attribution for the John Marson Prize for an Outstanding and Creative Musician (2008).

Claire Iselin has been a performing soloist in the UK, France, Switzerland, China, and the United States among other countries. In the UK she performed with the Kantanti Chamber Orchestra, Sidcup Symphony Orchestra, and the Billroth Ensemble. Claire was the guest principal harpist with European Union Youth Orchestra in Stuttgart, Germany under the baton of Vladimir Ashkenazy in 2012. During the 11th World Harp Congress in July of 2011 she was invited to perform The Crown of Ariadne by R. Murray Schafer in Vancouver, Canada.

Among Claire's expansive repertoire, some of the most noted for chamber/orchestra are  Ginastera Harp Concerto, Debussy Danses, Introduction and Allegro by Ravel. Amidst the solo realm are Moldau by Smetana, Spanish Dance by De Falla, Theme and Variations by Sancan.

Claire holds a deep passion for both classical and contemporary music and continues to instill that passion in younger generations through her private studio. In addition to teaching, Claire has shared her talents with multiple chamber groups including: A Piacere (2 harps), Marson Harp Trio, Fiona Kelly (Flute) and Claire Iselin (Harp), and Sardane (combinations of flute, violin, cello, viola, double bass, string quartet, and harp).
